A+ Emails for Back-to-School

Although Boston is in the hottest weeks of summer, fall is upon us and that means cooler weather, Sunday football (go Pats!), pumpkin spice lattes, and back-to-school shopping.

School shopping begins earlier each year, so while you’ve been busy soaking up the sun, retailers’ email campaigns have been in full swing for months. In a survey conducted by Prosper Insights & Analytics, last year “nearly one-quarter of families were shopping at least two months before school started.” Did any of my fellow non-students and non-parents get caught up in the sales frenzy? (Don’t worry, I did too!)

Check out some emails below that I think deserve an “A+”.

1. Vineyard Vines

Subject Line: Shop back-to-school looks that kids LOVE.

Why I love it: I am such a fan of Vineyard Vines (VV) emails. Their designs are always classic and simple, while still aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Vineyard Vines proposes to parents that if they dress their little scholars in VV, they will be the most stylish kids on campus. Judging by their adorable models, I’m sold. How cute are they!?

2. T.J. Maxx

Subject Line: Back-to-school destination #1

Why I love it: T.J. Maxx advertises its back-to-school clothing and dorm décor in this email campaign representing one stop shopping. As the subject line suggests, T.J. Maxx is the only destination you need to visit to get everything you need for the school year and their call to action makes it easy to do so online. T.J. Maxx also appeals to a wide audience as it targets those who are returning to grade school, and those who are heading back to college.

3. Sam Moon Trading Co.

Subject Line: Take 20% Off For The Back To School Sale!

Why I love it: I like how Sam Moon uses the repetition of a symbolic yellow pencil to create its email design. Although the pencils are facing every direction, the design still has symmetry and nothing screams “back to school” like a #2 pencil. If their clean and simple, yet attractive, design doesn’t get one to shop Sam Moon, a coupon code for 20% off your order probably will. Lastly, this email is optimized for mobile devices and features social links allowing for interaction and sharing.
